Distance

“Distance” was created in 2020, when I asked two fellow Melbourne-based artists, Tina Stefanou and Emily Bennett to help me make a video work to process the traumas I was experiencing through the pandemic.

The collaboration had to take place remotely, as the creative development happened during a lockdown. I asked Tina to create the video installation and sent video clips and links such as those containing my family memories and footage of the Black Lives Matter protests which had significant meanings for me. I asked Emily to live-process my improvised vocals remotely. My vocal improvisation was captured as a video which was later edited with the videos that Tina had created for the installation.

This work places around my body images and sounds which trigger personal experiences of pain. By surrounding myself with these stimuli, I aimed to address, communicate, process, and transform my experiences of pain through embodied listening and vocal improvisation.
